She became interested in the field of optometry after her first visit to the family optometrist, Dr. Leopold Lacourciere. Sitting at the back of the class in high school, Dr. Filippone discovered herself needing to squint to read notes on the blackboard properly. After graduating from high school, she completed one post secondary year of education at the University of Waterloo in 1979 and was then accepted into the four year professional optometry program. She successively completed the program and graduated in 1983 with a Doctor of Optometry degree. Coincidentally, she received the “The Leopold Lacourciere Award for General Proficiency” in the first year of its inception.
